10 Ways to Connect With Your Authentic Self
Beneath the layers of emotions and collected data lies your authentic self. It only takes a little awareness to be in touch with our inner truth rather than the opinions of society, ego and the media.
Here is a list of 10 ways to begin the process of connecting with your authentic self, the wonderful, happy, joyful being that you truly are.
Forgive Yourself
You are not perfect because no one on this planet is. When will you let go of the things that have happened and forgive yourself for being human? Being human means learning through experience and that is by far one of the best ways to be in touch with your authentic self.
Love Yourself
Take all the affection, love, attention and compliments you share with your loved ones and turn it inwards.
Have Your Own Back
Standing up for yourself is the same as standing up for your friends. Be there for yourself, stand up for what is right for you and most importantly, do what feels right. When things get overwhelming or scary, remember that you are there for yourself and not going anywhere.
Put Yourself First
Prior to making a decision, ask yourself, “Is this really what I want?” If the answer is no but I should do it, reconsider your decision. You are the most important person in your life and when you begin to listen to what is best for you, you begin to honor your true self.
Listen to Your Body
Our body can help us find the answers we’ve been looking for. Notice when your body begins to feel tense, tired or overexcited. Close your eyes and breathe. What is this feeling trying to tell you? Is it asking you to rest and slow down, stay away from someone, or release your energy?
Do Something You’ve Always Dreamed Of
Is there something you’ve always wanted to try, but you feel like it’s too hard, too expensive, too far keep you away – well, here is your opportunity to shake things up and actually do it. Take a step today to make this a reality. Make a list of a few things and choose one to commit to. Put this list out there and let all your friends know that you are doing it.
Do What You Love
Schedule a “me” date to do precisely what you want to do – whether it is a Suits marathon, rollerblading or sleeping in on a weekday. Allow yourself to do it. Allow this to be another day of connecting with your authentic self again.
Receive Love and Support From Others
It is easier than it sounds but we often put more power into giving rather than receiving. The next time somebody offers to help you, whether it’s the clerk at the supermarket who helps you to your car or a friend who pays for a coffee – say YES! And that’s not all: If you need something and someone can help you with it, ask them.
Sit in Nature
Make plans for a swim, hike or picnic in the park. Nature is a powerful teacher of presence. Notice the peaceful environment and natural flow. Perceive that everything is as it should be, without constraint.
When You Have the Opportunity to Laugh – Let It All Out
When was the last time you laughed so hard your stomach hurt? Begin to notice all the funny scenarios that surround you and just laugh. The world won’t fall apart if you act silly for a while. Spend more time with young kids or watch a stand-up comedy to get you going.
Can you imagine how it would feel if, one day, what you think and say are in perfect alignment with what you feel, with your authentic self? With awareness, love and an open mind, you can feel authentic and free. Begin by trying one item in the list above.
